The door and glass gaskets on wood-burning stoves are wear-and-tear parts. Over time, they will lose their ability to keep your stove airtight. Signs of wear will begin to appear.
How can you recognize these signs?
The most common signs of wear are as follows:
- The gasket begins to fray and disintegrate
- The stove glass turns black from soot (indicating a tighter seal)
- The stove consumes more wood than usual (stronger draft)
If you notice any of the above issues, you should immediately replace the door/glass gasket.
How do you replace the door gasket?
Generally speaking, the process is fairly simple. Just:
- Remove the old door gasket using a screwdriver
- Scrape off the old adhesive with a screwdriver to remove as much residue as possible
- Vacuum up the adhesive residue
- Measure the exact length of the seal and cut it to size with scissors
- Apply some Magic Feu thermal adhesive into the groove where you will attach the new gasket
- Position the new Magic Feu door gasket around the groove where you previously applied the thermal adhesive
- Leave the door closed for about 12 hours so the thermal adhesive can dry
